News from 6th Grade
The Addams Family
On Wednesday, sixth graders were treated to a Broadway performance of The Addams Family. Our group had wonderful seats at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater generously provided by the Amagansett PTA. The students really enjoyed seeing the classic Addams characters such as Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch and Uncle Fester on stage. The show was actually based on an original story in which Wednesday falls in love with a boy from a “normal” family. The boy and his family come to visit the eccentric Addams house, and that is where the fun begins! Our group was thoroughly entertained by the nonstop shenanigans that occur as the two different families spend the evening together. Upon returning to school we discussed the play and several of its themes, especially the concept of fitting in. Sixth graders worked in small groups to discuss how people often change the way they look or speak so that they can fit in. They made some great connections between the play and life as a sixth grader. All in all, it was a fantastic field trip and wonderful learning experience for everyone.
Energy Resources
Sixth graders are nearing the end of a unit on energy and energy resources. Recently they have been learning about renewable and nonrenewable resources. Students are starting to understand that certain resources, such as fossil fuels, cannot be replaced easily if at all. Other resources, such as solar energy or wind, are considered renewable because they can be used again and again. As a final project, students will research one of the five alternative energy resources that they have learned about in class. They will create either a poster or a model showing how the resource is harnessed as well as how it generates electrical energy. Students will have about three class periods to work on the project, but are also encouraged to work on it at home. Projects will be presented in class this Friday.
